The Fire TV Stick 4K Select requires up to 1 Amp at 5V (5W) from its Micro-USB power source. Many laptop USB ports can’t provide this peak power, causing the device to restart sporadically during high CPU usage scenarios.
This can happen during the OTA update and the device may stop working.
Do not update your device while it’s plugged into your laptop. ![]()
To prevent this, connect your device with the included wall charger or one of the other power sources below, and update through the settings menu.
Solution 1: Use the included wall charger
Connect the Fire TV Stick 4K Select to the wall with the USB power source, your TV with the HDMI, and update your device through the settings menu.
Solution 2: Use a USB Y-Cable
Connect the Fire TV Stick 4K Select to your laptop using a USB Y-Cable. This cable lets you draw power from both the laptop’s USB port and the Amazon-provided USB power adapter, ensuring the device receives adequate power.
To increase the reach between your laptop and the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, use a USB-A Male to Female extender cable with the Y-Cable.
Solution 3: Use a powered USB hub
Connect the Fire TV Stick 4K Select to your laptop through an independently powered USB 3.0 hub capable of providing 1 Amp or more.
