Web apps discontinued

Hello,

Today we received a notification from Amazon indicating that web apps are no longer supported for new submissions from the developer portal.

We verified that the ‘Mobile Web’ app type is no longer an option when attempting to submit an app from the portal.

Besides the notification emails and a brief on-screen alert within the portal, are there any official links from Amazon further explaining what happened, what to expect from existing web apps, whether or not Android apps will still be supported, etc.?

Thanks.

Hi nw-dev-ott,

Thanks for posting! Yes, Android apps are supported, and you will be able to continue to submit new Android apps via your Developer Portal account.

As for Mobile Web apps, starting Oct 31, 2024, we will no longer be accepting submissions for any new web apps. However, all existing live web apps will continue to be available in Amazon Appstore.

What about smart tv web apps? The docs still go extensively over the option but at the moment of creating a new app only the andoid options is given in the dropdwon menu.

Hi
is this still a working option?

Hi Nicolas,

Discontinuation of web apps applies to all devices, including TV. The docs are being updated to include the announcement.

Hi Aaron,

Yes, Fire App Builder is an option, however please note that it’s a template to let you get started with Fire TV development quickly. It includes basic customisations, but is limited in how it can be extended. If you just need a template to provide your media feed + simple customisations, it’s a good option. But if you want full control over all aspects of your app, I would suggest looking towards building one yourself.

Thanks
for now I only need something simple, basic.

Then Fire App Builder is a good choice for that. Thanks!

Can you recommend a minimum required version for Android Studio and Java Development Kit (JDK).
thank you

Hi Aaron,

Sure, while there is no recommended minimum version, a good practice is to download the latest Android Studio available from Google’s Developers portal: הורדת Android Studio ו כלים לאפליקציות - מפתחי Android  |  Android Developers

and then you’ll be able to install JDK from within the studio. I hope that helps.

Cheers!
