INSTALL_FAILED_USER_RESTRICTED message when trying to install app

INSTALL_FAILED_USER_RESTRICTED message when trying to install app on Fire TV

O/S

7.6.8.0
PS 7680/4923

I’m using adb to install a 3rd party app I downloaded but it appears that I am not authorised to install it. I get the above message from adb.

I have a Fire Stick and I can install the app with adb without any problem. Is there a known problem with Fire TV ?

How do I get authorisation to install an app, I can connect to the Fire TV with the adb developer tools and access the device but not install apps ? Thanks any help appreciated

Hi there,

Welcome to the forums and thanks for posting!

Could you please create a contact-us case using the developer account with the following information? Please also refer to this post in the case:

  1. App Name (you want to download & Install)
  2. Device DSN
  3. Logs and Screenshot

Additionally, can you check if this app is available in Amazon Appstore?

Thanks

Thanks you - I have created a contact-us Case id

I’m also getting this on my Toshiba TV - Fire OS 7.6.8.0 (PS7680/4923)

I’ve submitted a case on the 22nd, but no one has looked at it yet.

Hi Brophy,

I raised a case and was eventually contacted by the support desk. After the call they basically said that the Toshiba fire tv could not install apps which are not in the App Store. They thought that this may be a deliberate restriction or a bug but they weren’t sure.

I thought that Android devices such as the Fire TV should be able to install apps but they only said that any future updates of the O/S may allow this. I think this is totally unsatisfactory.

Thanks for the reply. I agree that its unacceptable, especially if they are not giving people the heads up about this.

This is the main message I get:

Unauthorized apk installation detected. Please do not install performance benchmark apk without permission from deviceprot@amazon.com

Ive emailed this address, no one seems to be looking at this inbox.

Surely it shouldnt be difficult to push an update out to fix this.

I purchased this tv (my third tv with fire os) because it saves me buying a fire stick to go with another tv and ive never had an issue until we had this toshiba tv, it seems to be a common theme for this brand of tv.

Has amazon supplied the wrong os to the tv manufacturer?

Looking online about it, i saw this.

This message is caused by an internal tool used by Amazon to prevent beta testers of unreleased devices from sideloading apps that may leak information about the device. Benchmarking apps, specifically, will often upload hardware information about the device being tested to public databases. The existence of unreleased Amazon devices in the past has been leaked through these benchmarking utilities. As a result, Amazon blocks sideloading of all but select apps on unreleased devices that are being tested internally.

Would be nice to know if we could get a fix from amazon for this or if not, at least an acknowledgement that it wont be fixed, so i can return the tv for another brand.

The same message I got

I agree

Could be the case

This is good to know. I never found this online but I suspect this is central to the issue

I thought about returning my TV but as it was bought for my kitchen and is of small size, unfortunately I do not have a lot of choice as a replacement

I’ve just had a promising reply to my case

Thank you for contacting us. We appreciate your patience as we checked on your situation. The appropriate teams are working on a software deployment to address the issue on your Toshiba 43LF2F53DB.

Once it is ready, you will see a prompt to update to the latest Fire OS version.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause you. We will provide an update when further information is available.

Best regards,

Amazon Developer Support

I’ve asked for a rough ETA

Excellent news. It’s good to see that they are now taking this seriously

Just had this:

Hi,

Thank you for your patience! I have received confirmation that a software update to fix the issue should be rolling out within the next week or so. The mentioned error message should disappear once you have updated your TV to the latest FireOS version.

Thanks Brophy, Great news !

Same problem, the message IS still there but It dissapears without me cliking on It , I had to take a video of the process to see what was the message, I was trying to install an app that IS on the appstore and IS used by everyone " screen mirroring " so not… A dangerous unknown app. I Hope the update fix it

Good that it appears to now work.

I downloaded the latest O/S version today and
it has allowed me to install the apps I need.
Looks like a good result. I hope everyone else is ok with this fix.

Glad It helped you but I installed the last update available to me today( maybe the problem is that I have another model but same brand or that I live in Spain and maybe the update IS not available for me yet ) and the message still appears

Yep, i had the same update, all working for me now too.

Might be worth creating a support case asking about it, especially if its a different model
